Courses

AMINOR is a cluster of collaborating researchers from the Fram Centre that trains and educates PhD and master students in a dynamic teaching environment. Our courses take place at UiT The Arctic University of Norway.

 1. AMINOR specific courses

Environmental systems: integration of monitoring, research and management – BIO-8006 (10 STP)

The course is a basic course for AMINOR PhD students. It has been developed based on presentations and discussions held during previous AMINOR workshops. It aims at integrating monitoring, research, and management around three themes: climate systems, ecological systems (terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems), and the relationships between society, climate, and ecological systems. For each theme, the course relies on concrete case studies from northern regions, as well as presentations of general principles, such as adaptive management and monitoring.

Ecological methodology: study design and statistical analysis – BIO-8105 (10 STP)

This course focus on design and statistical analyses and it is oriented towards monitoring of environmental systems and the contrast among different research strategies (e.g. observational versus experimental studies). This course is a core course for the AMINOR students.

For more details, look up for the course number in the university course catalogue or contact us.

Lunch discussions

Every week (unless other activities are planned), AMINOR holds a lunch discussion, which is a 45-min informal gathering at lunch time during which researchers and students discuss a topic that is either based on a paper or a presentation. All discussions occur online.

To receive notifications for upcoming Lunch discussions, you need to sign-up to the AMINOR Slack workspace and add the channel “calendar_events” (see here for how to add a channel.

If you have an “@uit.no”, “@hi.no”, “@npolar.no”, “@niku.no“, “@niva.no“, “@met.no“, or “@nina.no” email address, you should automatically have access to the AMINOR Slack workspace. You only need to create a Slack account and sign up to AMINOR Slack workspace. Then you can select to receive notifications by emails or directly through Slack (look here for all details on how to do this).

Contact Arnaud Tarroux (arnaud.tarroux[.at.]nina.no) if you do not have one of the addresses listed above, or if you have issues with registration or functionalities in Slack.

Afternoon discussions

AMINOR holds 4-5 groups discussions every year, each of them lasting between 2 to 4 hours. These afternoon discussions aim at gathering researchers and students to discuss a topic of interest based on recent research articles or presentations from guest researchers. Afternoon discussions allow member to assess and reflect on analytical methods and conceptual advances linked to central problems within different monitoring and management schemes. Members can attend the afternoon discussions through videoconferencing.

Workshops

AMINOR holds several workshops per year where students, researchers, and invited guests gather to deepen their knowledge on specific topics that are of interest to researchers across flagships and reserach programs of the FRAM Centre. The workshops cover a diversity of themes, ecosystems, and try to address the societal challenges linked to these topics. Our workshops focus particularly on study designs, analytical
methods, theoretical development, and conceptual advances.

Most of these workshops are held intensively over a few days. All members of the Fram Centre can attend these workshops through videoconferencing. The workshops can take three different forms:

  1. Learning workshop: guests are invited to teach a topic for the members
  2. Conceptual workshop: guests are invited to give seminars and discuss further the topics covered through panel debates or group discussions
  3. Combined workshop: first a learning part, allowing people to learn the basis or get updated, followed by a conceptual part, allowing people already knowledgeable on the topic to only join for discussing conceptual advances.

To receive notifications for upcoming activities, you need to sign-up to the AMINOR Slack workspace and adding the channel “calendar_events” (see here for how to add a channel.

Online discussion channels

The AMINOR FORUM is a discussion channel for stimulating discussions among research scientists and graduate students. The forum promotes the development of a strong multidisciplinary research network on the integration of monitoring, research, and management in the North, providing a place for discussing specific models and methods. The aim is to help members to keep updated and continually develop their knowledge and competences on study designs, analytical methods, theoretical development, and conceptual advances.

To join the AMINOR FORUM, you need to sign-up to the AMINOR Slack workspace and adding the channel “forum” (see here for how to add a channel).
